Unacceptable Conditions

Today I was feeling hungry, so I walked into a restaurant and was flabbergasted by what I saw: a two foot arowana in a three foot aquarium. Oh no, that’s not all; there were also about eleven parrot fish, two severums and two plecostomus (a.k.a algae eaters, suckers, etc.) I was outraged. First of all, just looking at the aquarium you can see that the fish were unhappy, also the water level was just above half of the aquarium (for those of you that don’t know, that means that the aquarium is being neglected). It could also mean that the owner is trying to prevent the arowana from jumping out, but by the size of it, believe me; it could jump out no matter how low the water level.
Now I know that the thought of having an aquarium is nice, but if you know that you lack knowledge of aquatic ecosystems, do something about it, READ! There is an abundance of well grounded information available. Also, if you think that you will not have the time, then either hire someone to care for the fish, or just in the famous words of the mafia, “Fugettaboutit”.
It is unacceptable to keep fish or any live animal in appalling conditions. In the restaurants defense, they did have another aquarium that was nicely planted with a multitude of guppies: the aquarium was not only nice to look at, but all the fish seemed happy, and you could tell that the ecosystem was stable. The worst thing about all of this is a conversation I “over heard” between two patrons; both of them were in awe at what I consider the worst aquarium I have seen in years. I made a terrible mistake of not educating them on the spot, because what can happen now is that one, or both of them may end up with a monstrosity like that in their living rooms thinking that it is the correct thing to do. And then it’s just a snowball rolling downhill from there.

Attack of the Betta Fish!

For the last 5 months Betta fish (also known as, Siamese fighting fish)have become extremely popular. Well, I guess they were always popular, but for me this is something new. I mean, I deal with all kinds of people on a daily basis that have different kinds of needs and wants when it comes to the topic of fish and a betta would come up every now and then; but now it’s only about Betta’s. I assume there are four reasons for this. The first reason is mere interest. Betta fish are seen just about everywhere, offices, on the counter at your hair or nail salon, class rooms, and possibly even at some of your friends houses; the more you see them when you’re out and about, the more they appeal to your interest. The second reason is ease. Everyone says “betta fish are so easy to care for, they don’t need a big aquarium with a filter, they only need to be fed once a day, and they can even go up to four days without eating.” The third reason is cost. For under $20 you can own a complete betta setup that includes the fish, the housing, the food, and the water treatment chemicals. The fourth reason is companionship. Whether you’re having a hard day at the office, you just had a hard day or you just want some company; the betta will be there for you. To get your betta, and instructions for caring for them email me and I will be glad to help you.
